Course Description

Behavioral activation is a brief,  evidence-based psychotherapy often used in the treatment of depression.  This course will prepare clinicians to assess depression using standardized tools, apply the behavioral activation model for depression, and implement a behavioral activation treatment strategy for depression.  Case examples are used throughout to illustrate the behavioral activation model and implementation strategies.  Important topics, such as troubleshooting, maintenance, safety issues, and relapse prevention are included.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1) Prepare a depression assessment and behavioral activation progress monitoring strategy using standardized tools.

2) Describe the theoretical model of behavioral activation for depression and apply the model to a case example.

3) Create and implement a behavioral activation treatment strategy for depression.

PRESENTER
Mia Nuñez, PhD

Mia Nuñez, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Western Regional Clinical Director for NOCD. Dr. Nuñez leads her region of mental health professionals to ensure patients receive high-quality psychological services. She is also responsible for training the entire network of therapists on evidence-based treatments, including behavioral activation.

Dr. Nuñez received specialized training in behavioral activation from Northwestern University and the Depression Treatment Clinic. Dr. Nuñez continued to build her expertise in the behavioral treatment of mood and anxiety disorders during her predoctoral psychology internship at the APPIC-accredited Rogers Behavioral Health Hospital.

Dr. Nuñez has worked as a supervising psychologist for several inpatient and residential specialty programs. As a supervising psychologist, Dr. Nuñez supervised therapists in their delivery of behavioral activation for treatment of depression comorbid with eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also personally provided behavioral activation for complex cases. Dr. Nuñez contributed to Roger’s CBT Training Academy as an instructor for many courses, including behavioral activation for depression, and was a principal investigator on their research team.

NOCD, #1805, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. NOCD maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 03/25/2022 – 03/25/2023. Social workers completing this course receive 2 continuing education credits.

NOCD is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NOCD maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
