OCD in Adults: Symptoms, Assessment & an Introduction to First-Line Treatments
1.5 hours (1.5 CE credits; 1.5 CE hours)
This course will prepare clinicians to recognize symptoms and perform an assessment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as clearly describe the first-line treatment options for OCD in adults. We’ll begin with identifying the essential diagnostic criteria for OCD and discussing comorbidities associated with OCD that are often seen during the clinical interview. Next, we describe evidence-based assessment tools used for the evaluation of symptoms and severity of OCD. The course concludes with an introduction to contemporary first-line treatment recommendations for adults with OCD. Case examples and practical strategies for assessment and clinical interviewing are included throughout.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the essential diagnostic criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and describe its relationship to common comorbidities.
- Prepare an OCD-specific assessment strategy using evidence-based assessment tools.
- Describe the contemporary first-line treatment recommendations for adults with OCD.

Childhood OCD: Symptoms and Assessment
2 hours (2 CE credits; 2 CE hours)
This course will prepare clinicians to recognize symptoms of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and prepare an assessment strategy specific to this population. Illustrative case examples will be used to describe the essential diagnostic criteria for OCD and the use of specifiers for children and adolescents. The presenter will also discuss contemporary research findings related to the conceptualization and clinical presentation of pediatric OCD. We’ll conclude with a discussion on clinical interviewing and evidence-based assessment tools specific to pediatric OCD.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List the essential diagnostic criteria for childhood OCD and discuss contemporary research findings related to conceptualization and clinical presentation.
- Prepare a child and adolescent-specific assessment strategy for OCD that includes evidence-based assessment tools.

OCD Subtypes: Identification and Treatment
2 hours (2 CE credits; 2 CE hours)
There are many benefits to being able to describe and discuss various subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; e.g., harm, scrupulosity, contamination, sexual orientation, perfectionism). Subtype knowledge can be useful for demonstrating understanding and professional competence, developing rapport with patients, improving communication with patients and other professionals, reducing shame as a potential barrier to treatment, and improving treatment plans.
In this course, participants will learn to recognize and describe the various subtypes of OCD. The course also includes engaging case examples of evidence-based strategies (e.g., exposure and response prevention) for the treatment of OCD subtypes.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and describe the essential features of various subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
- Apply evidence-based treatment strategies to various subtypes of OCD.
