Live webinar

Understanding ‘Pure O’ in OCD.

October 23, 2025
WITH TAYLOR NEWENDORP, MA, LCPC

Course Description

“Pure O,” short for “Purely Obsessional OCD,” is a frequently misunderstood presentation of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Despite the label, individuals with this subtype typically engage in covert or mental compulsions in addition to experiencing intrusive obsessions. This course will examine the features of OCD commonly categorized as “Pure O,” clarify why the term is a misnomer, and outline the distinctions between obsessions and mental compulsions. Participants will also explore the clinical challenges involved in identifying and treating “Pure O” presentations and review strategies for effectively applying exposure and response prevention (ERP).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify and describe the symptom presentations commonly labeled as “Pure O” in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

2. Differentiate obsessions from mental compulsions to enhance accuracy in assessment and diagnosis.

3. Apply evidence-based ERP strategies to address the treatment challenges unique to “Pure O” presentations.
