Treatment of OCD in Adults

WITH PATRICK B. McGRATH, PhD

Course Description

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based treatment for adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).  This course will discuss research findings related to the effectiveness of ERP for OCD, along with describing the basic principles and risks and benefits of the treatment.  Key components of ERP will be taught, including how to develop an exposure hierarchy and how and why to use various ERP methods (i.e., in vivo, imaginal, and interoceptive exposures).  Safety behaviors and family accommodation are known to worsen OCD severity; this course will include a discussion on these important concepts.  Illustrative adult OCD and ERP case examples are provided to help participants merge concept with practical application.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how to apply exposure and response prevention (ERP) to reduce the severity of OCD symptoms in adults.
  2. Apply evidence-based treatment strategies to various subtypes of OCD.
