Treating Contamination OCD Using the Mastery Approach with Rich Gallagher, LMFT

Course Description

This presentation will teach clinicians how to use the Mastery approach, a well-tolerated functional approach to ERP designed for cases that do not respond to traditional ERP, such as disgust or other non-habituating triggers, neurodiversity, comorbidities and more.

The Mastery approach represents a synthesis of exposure and response prevention (ERP), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and emerging literature on the use of judicious safety behaviors to practice functioning better in cases where triggers do not directly habituate. It has been presented at two IOCDF conferences and is now in use at numerous major OCD clinics worldwide, including higher-level-of-care (HLOC) facilities.

You will also have the chance to hear Q&A hosted by Dr. McGrath.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the limits of traditional ERP treatment for contamination OCD, including cases such as disgust and/or other non-habituating triggers, neurodiversity, comorbidities, trauma, grief, life change and others.

2. Learn how to apply the Mastery approach in treating contamination OCD, a functional approach to ERP based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that focuses on practicing avoided situations versus habituating to triggers.

3. Understand how the principle of Readiness guides practice strategy and enhances treatment motivation in the Mastery approach.
