The Space Between Sessions: Exposure Homework That Actually Gets Done with Dr. Fisher

Course Description

Most of ERP happens between sessions, and that is where treatment most often stalls: assignments that never get attempted, exposures that drift from the plan, and a next session that starts with little idea of what actually happened. This talk covers practical methods for structuring between-session work: designing assignments patients will actually do, calibrating difficulty, and reviewing what happened in a way that moves treatment forward. The material comes from Dr. Fisher's caseload at the Anxiety Relief Clinic.

Disclosure: Dr. Fisher is the founder of Conicia (conicia.com), a commercial program for structured between-session work in OCD. It is publicly available; patients sign up directly and can connect the clinician they work with. The talk draws on lessons from building and using it, and none of the methods discussed require it.

Contributor

Weston Fisher, MD

Dr. Fisher is a medical doctor who specialized in adult mental health by completing residency training in 2014 at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

After training, he was recruited to the faculty and served as a professor for eight years, practicing clinically and training medical students and future psychiatrists. During this time, Dr. Fisher co-directed the UCSF Anxiety and OCD Clinic, and honed his skills as an expert in these areas.

More recently, he transitioned to volunteer faculty and, after a brief stint in the health technology world, he opened the Anxiety Relief Clinic so that he could dedicate himself more fully to working directly with those seeking treatment. He is also the founder of Conicia, a program for structured between-session work in OCD that grew out of that practice.
