Special Considerations for Working with Perinatal OCD.

April 30, 2025
WITH JASON GIBBS, PhD
& MIA NUÑEZ, PhD

Course Description

For some individuals, symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) develop or worsen during the perinatal period (pregnancy and/or postpartum) - this is commonly referred to as ‘Perinatal OCD.’  Perinatal OCD can be highly debilitating, difficult to recognize, and may go untreated.  This course will describe what perinatal OCD is and discuss contemporary research findings on the topic.  The presenters will then discuss the difficulty of differentiating perinatal OCD from other symptom presentations (e.g., psychosis, postpartum depression) and provide recommendations to aid in accurate assessment. Case studies will be used to describe evidence-based strategies to focus on during the treatment of perinatal OCD.  The course concludes by highlighting several special treatment considerations, including the importance of empathy and psychoeducation, the use of exposure and response prevention (ERP) during the perinatal period, incorporating peer and group support for patients, discussing shame and guilt with patients, paternal OCD, and family accommodation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss contemporary research findings related to perinatal OCD.

2. Identify key similarities and differences between perinatal OCD and other related disorders.

3. Describe evidence-based treatment strategies for perinatal OCD and special considerations to keep in mind when working with the population.
