This intermediate-level course will prepare clinicians to treat individuals with panic disorder using cognitive-behavioral therapy with particular emphasis on exposure therapy techniques, which have strong scientific support for panic disorder. The course includes an overview of the diagnostic criteria for panic disorder, along with case examples that highlight key features of the disorder. Panic-specific assessment tools will be discussed to aid the clinician in identifying symptoms and tracking treatment progress. The presenter will then explain how panic symptoms are understood to be maintained, along with how to develop and execute an individually-tailored exposure-based treatment plan. This course assumes the clinician has a basic understanding of exposure therapy. Video demonstrations and interactive activities will aid clinicians in developing their understanding and skills.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Describe the diagnostic criteria and key features of panic disorder.
Explain to clients how panic symptoms are maintained according to an evidence-based cognitive-behavioral model.
Apply exposure-based strategies to treat panic disorder, including interoceptive and in-vivo exposures.
