Course Description

In this course we will teach you what non-prescribing mental health professionals need to know about medication for OCD. We’ll provide an overview of effective and ineffective treatments for OCD, discuss 1st and 2nd line medications and side effects, explain what an augmentation strategy is, discuss theories of how medications work, and review who may be a good candidate for medication plus CBT.

  1. Name two of the first-line medications for OCD.
  2. Describe common SSRI side-effects.
  3. Identify who might be a good candidate for medication plus CBT.

Presenter

Jamie Feusner, MD

Jamie Feusner, MD, Diplomate, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, obtained his medical degree and completed his psychiatry residency  at the University of California Los Angeles. He then completed a one-year clinical psychopharmacology fellowship followed by a two-year National Institute of Mental Health research fellowship.

Dr. Feusner's research program seeks to understand perceptual and emotional processing phenotypes across conditions involving body image and obsessions/compulsions, including body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, and OCD.  He has also investigated predictors of acute and long-term treatment response to cognitive-behavioral therapy. 

Dr. Feusner has extensive experience with clinical teaching of cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy. 

Dr. Feusner is the Chief Medical Officer for NOCD, is a Professor in the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychiatry, Division of Neurosciences & Clinical Translation, is a Clinician Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, is an Adjunct Professor at the Karolinska Institute, is a member of the board of directors of the International College of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, is on the editorial board of the Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders, and is a member of the IOCDF Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board. He is the former Director of the UCLA Adult OCD Intensive Treatment program.

Continuing Education Credit

SOCIAL WORKERS

NOCD, #1805, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 03/25/2023 - 03/25/2026. Social workers completing this course receive 1 clinical continuing education credit.


PSYCHOLOGISTS

NOCD is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NOCD maintains responsibility for this program and its content.


COUNSELORS

NOCD has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7212. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NOCD is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

REGISTRATION FOR HOME STUDY CE COURSES

To register for a home study CE course (asynchronous course), click the enrollment button on the course page.  Create your NOCD Academy account or login (if you are already registered).  Complete the check-out process.   


ACCESS A HOME STUDY CE COURSE

Home study CE courses will launch automatically following registration.  To access a home study CE course again at a later time, login to the NOCD Academy.  Click My Dashboard  (located in the header).  Click Resume Course.


ATTENDANCE, COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS & CERTIFICATES FOR HOME STUDY CE COURSES

NOCD accurately documents attendance for all CE activities.  To be eligible for CE credit (CE hours) for home study CE courses, participants must view the entire course and successfully complete any prerequisites [i.e., pass the quiz with a score of 75% or greater (70% in the case of 10 questions) within 3 attempts] within 60 days of registration.  NOCD will not offer variable credit for partial course completion or participation.  

Digital certificates of completion are available upon successful course completion.  Certificates are downloadable and are also available in your profile.  Include your licensing information in your profile to have it included on your certificate.


COURSE MATERIALS

Individuals who registered for a home study CE course will have access to course materials for 60 days following registration.
