Course Description

This intermediate-level course presents inhibitory learning theory (ILT), a framework for exposure therapy augmentation, which can be effectively applied to enhance the impact of treatment for individuals with fear-based disorders. We'll begin by reviewing the theory and limitations of "traditional" habituation-based emotional processing theory. Inhibitory learning theory will then be introduced as a contemporary framework that provides a differing perspective on how exposure therapy reduces fear.  Empirically-supported ILT principles and augmentation strategies will be discussed in-depth.  Case examples will be used throughout the course to illustrate the application of ILT to exposure therapy for fear-based disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how inhibitory learning theory (ILT) offers a different perspective on fear reduction from "traditional" emotional processing theory.
  2. Describe three or more key principles of ILT.
  3. Apply three or more ILT-informed augmentation strategies to exposure therapy for fear-based disorders.
