Identifying and Overcoming Common Therapist Challenges in Doing Exposure Therapy

WITH NICHOLAS FARRELL, PhD AND
TAYLOR NEWENDORP, MA, LCPC

Course Description

Exposure-based therapy, such as exposure and response prevention, is a well-established treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders. This advanced-level course will examine the common challenges therapists experience when providing exposure therapy and provide strategies to overcome these challenges. The presenters will begin by discussing delivery characteristics and factors that can detract from the effectiveness of exposure therapy, including clinician reservations about exposure therapy and the potential impact of one’s own perfectionistic tendencies. Strategies aimed at enhancing the clinician’s delivery of exposure therapy will then be described, including emotional appeals and attitude inoculation.

It is highly suggested that participants in this course have a foundational knowledge of exposure-based therapy principles. Demonstrations and interactive activities will aid clinicians in developing their understanding and skills.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 2 delivery characteristics or factors that can impact the outcome of exposure therapy.
  2. Identify 2 strategies that can be used by a clinician to enhance their delivery of exposure therapy.
