Cultural Competence in Mental Health: Considerations, Barriers, and Best Practices

Course Description

This talk explores the role of cultural competence and cultural humility in delivering ethical and effective mental health care. Participants will examine the impact of cultural identity, implicit bias, and systemic barriers on access to and engagement in treatment, with attention to diverse populations and the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Evidence-informed strategies for providing culturally responsive care will be presented, with a focus on improving therapeutic alliance and treatment outcomes. Participants will also engage in self-reflection and group based discussion to support the application of culturally attuned practices in clinical settings.

Charlie Bishop, MS, LMFT

Charlece “Charlie” Bishop, MS, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, speaker, and founder of CR Counseling, a private practice based in Birmingham, AL. She earned her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Alabama and holds the AAMFT Clinical Fellow designation. Charlie is also a certified specialist in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), and Tics Disorders.

In addition to her clinical work, Charlie is the founder of Command the Stage Institute, a speaker development program that empowers aspiring speakers with the tools they need to deliver impactful presentations. She currently serves as the Charlie-Elect for the Alabama Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (2025-2027).

An accomplished author and international speaker, Charlie’s work focuses on Black culture, social equality, eating disorders, body image issues, and mental health. Her research interests include eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, BFRBs, tics disorder, body dysmorphia, anxiety disorders, systemic racial trauma, and Black mental health.

Tameca Minter, PhD, LPC-S, LMHC

Dr. Tameca Minter is a Therapist for NOCD and a licensed professional counselor. Dr. Minter has extensive experience with OCD, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders. She is known for her humor and strong background in working with children and adolescents.

Dr. Minter received specialized training in Pediatric Behavior Therapy Training Institute from the International Association of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Foundation with training in Atlanta, GA and Advanced Forum in Toronto, Canada. She has been trained through the NOCD Academy of NOCD, Inc. She has worked extensively within numerous psychiatric settings and community clinical agencies: Glen Oaks Psychiatric Hospital (Greenville, TX),Timberlawn Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital (Dallas, TX) and Hickory Trails Hospital (DeSoto, TX).

Dr. Minter previously worked in various clinical, educational and correctional settings: Metrocare Services, Inc. - Dallas County MHMR, Dallas and within the correctional system of Texas (The GEO Group, Inc. and Management & Training Corporation [MTC]) and The Carr P. Collins Social Services Center - Women’s Substance Abuse Re-Entry - Salvation Army of North Texas.
