Course Description

This advanced-level course will focus on theoretical conceptualization and delivery of exposure-based therapy with complex child and adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) cases.  The presenter will begin with a discussion on proposed mechanisms and theory underlying exposure and response prevention (i.e., habituation and inhibitory learning theory) and how the literature can inform case conceptualization specific to the pediatric OCD population.  Practical ideas and tools are offered for implementing ERP with the pediatric population; including, adapting SUDS scales and exposure ideas, incorporating play-based strategies, and debunking myths about exposure-based therapy.  The presenter will also discuss treatment planning approaches that can be used with complex cases involving comorbidities (e.g., ADHD, depression).  Engaging case studies will be offered throughout the presentation to illustrate ideas and concepts.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Implement exposure-based practices with children and adolescents informed by research findings on habituation, inhibitory learning theory, and pediatric OCD treatment.
  2. Prepare a treatment plan for a child or adolescent with OCD that considers the role and impact of common comorbidities.
