Join Patrick McGrath, PhD, and Jamie Feusner, MD, for an informative and important discussion on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and substance use disorders (SUDs). They’ll describe the comorbid OCD and SUDS presentation, share prevalence rates and other relevant statistics, and discuss the importance of accurate diagnosis. Clinical interviewing strategies and recommended assessment tools will be offered. Treatment options for comorbid OCD and SUDs will be described, including psychotherapy (e.g., exposure and response prevention (ERP)) and medication treatment options. Special topics include: building the treatment team, treatment planning and sequencing, the role of higher levels of care, and lapse and relapse.

Identify evidence-based treatment options for comorbid OCD and SUDs.

PRESENTER
Patrick McGrath, PhD
Patrick B. McGrath, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and the Chief Clinical Officer for NOCD. In this role, he uses his expertise in obsessive-compulsive and related disorders to direct NOCD’s high-quality, evidence-based clinical program, provide weekly consultation groups, and develop and train the multidisciplinary network of clinicians. He has given hundreds of presentations on OCD, anxiety disorders, hoarding, school refusal, and other topics at local, national, and international conferences, as well as at universities, hospitals, and private practices. Dr. McGrath is also an experienced continuing education (CE) instructor.
Dr. McGrath earned his doctoral degree from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and completed his predoctoral internship with Grand Valley State University. Following a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute’s Anxiety Disorders Center, Dr. McGrath went on to work as a staff psychologist at Michigan State University.
Dr. McGrath later opened and led the OCD and Related Anxiety Disorders intensive outpatient, partial hospital, and residential treatment programs at AMITA Health. He also helped open and direct the AMITA Health Foglia Family Foundation Residential Treatment Center, the first treatment facility in the United States to treat OCD, anxiety disorders, and addiction concurrently. Throughout his career, he has provided direct clinical services and supervision for complex OCD cases. He’s also involved in OCD-related research and has several publications.
Dr. McGrath is a member of the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Boards of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF). He also serves as co-chair of the IOCDF's OCD and SUD special interest group. He is a Fellow of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and the Immediate Past President of OCD Midwest.

PRESENTER
Jamie Feusner, MD
Jamie Feusner, MD, Diplomate, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, obtained his medical degree and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of California Los Angeles. He then completed a one-year clinical psychopharmacology fellowship followed by a two-year National Institute of Mental Health research fellowship.
Dr. Jamie Feusner is Chief Medical Officer at NOCD. He is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Division of Neurosciences & Clinical Translation, Clinician Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and Adjunct Professor at the Karolinska Institute.
He formerly was Director of the UCLA OCD Intensive Treatment Program for 15 years.
Dr. Feusner’s groundbreaking clinical neuroscience research in OCD and related disorders, over the past 18 years, includes the first functional brain imaging studies in body dysmorphic disorder, and studies of accurate predictive modeling of treatment outcomes using neuroimaging, clinical data, and machine learning. He and the NOCD team published the largest study of clinical treatment in OCD to date, demonstrating that virtual exposure and response prevention is an efficacious and efficient treatment.
Dr. Feusner teaches pharmacotherapy and CBT for OCD, OCD related disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression to psychiatry residents and has been treating OCD and body dysmorphic disorder since 2002. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International College of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, a member of the International OCD Foundation Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board, and an Associate Editor of Translational Psychiatry. He has published many peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and lectures nationally & internationally on the topics of OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, and eating disorders.
